Lesson 3 of 6 · It is not weak faith

The one about antidepressants

Taking antidepressants shows you do not trust Allah. This one causes real damage, because its direct effect is that people stop their medication, and stopping is one of the reliable ways to relapse.

It is contradicted by the report that every disease has been given a treatment, and by the majority position among the jurists that seeking treatment is permitted and encouraged. Whether it becomes obligatory where harm is otherwise likely is disputed among them, and this platform does not settle disputes among jurists.

If somebody has told you to stop your tablets, the person to ask is the doctor who prescribed them, and the person to ask about the ruling is a scholar you trust. Not a comment section.

The first of the two below is the plainer one. Ordinary people asked whether they should make use of medical treatment, and the answer came back as an instruction to use it.

Narrated Usamah ibn Sharik: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions were sitting as if they had birds on their heads. I saluted and sat down. The desert Arabs then came from here and there. They asked: Messenger of Allah, should we make use of medical treatment? He replied: Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age

Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:There is a remedy for every malady, and when the remedy is applied to the disease it is cured with the permission of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious
