Where dua actually sits
Nothing in this lesson is an argument for praying less. Dua is not the alternative to preparation and preparation is not the alternative to dua. They are not competing for the same slot.
What is worth watching is the moment when a dua is being used as a way of ending the discomfort you feel about a task. If you notice a small relief straight after, and the file is still closed, that is the mechanism from lesson two wearing better clothes.
The tell is simple and private. After you asked, did anything get opened.
One practical note, and it is offered as a replacement rather than as a correction of you. There is a study and success supplication that circulates every exam season, and scholars asked about it have held that it has no basis in the reports (islamqa answers 69759 and 105409). If you have been reciting it since childhood, possibly because somebody who loved you taught it to you, nothing in that sentence is about you. What the collections do carry, in three of them, is a supplication about learning itself: O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, and teach me what will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge. And for the walk in, the one the Prophet, peace be upon him, said whenever a matter distressed him: O Living, O Sustainer, in Your mercy I seek relief. Both are sound and both are short enough to say at a door.

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“O Allah, benefit me with that which You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge. All praise is due to Allah in every condition, and I seek refuge in Allah from the condition of the people of the Fire (Allāhummanfa`nī bimā `allamtanī wa `allimnī mā yanfa`unī, wa zidnī `ilma, al-ḥamdulillāhi `alā kulli ḥālin, wa a`ūdhu billāhi min ḥāli ahlin-nār).”

Anas bin Malik said:“Whenever a matter would distress him, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say: ‘O Living, O Self-Sustaining Sustainer! In Your Mercy do I seek relief (Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth).’” And with this chain, that he said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Be constant with: “O Possessor of Majesty and Honor (Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām).’”
