Lesson 6 of 6 · When this course is not enough

Bringing other people in, in the tradition

This is not a modern invention. The Qur'an provides for two arbiters, one from his family and one from hers, where a couple are in serious trouble. And it names settlement between spouses as a good outcome in its own right, in a passage where the difficulty is attributed to the husband rather than the wife.

One limit, and it is important. That is a mechanism for a marriage in trouble between two people who both want a fair outcome. It is not a mechanism for a house where one person is afraid of the other, and mediation in that situation is dangerous rather than merely unhelpful.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Not a modern invention. The Qur'an provides for two arbiters, one from his family and one from hers, where a couple are in serious trouble.

If you [believers] fear that a couple may break up, appoint one arbiter from his family and one from hers. Then, if the couple want to put things right, God will bring about a reconciliation between them: He is all knowing, all aware

Qur’an 4:35

And it names settlement between spouses as a good outcome in its own right, in a passage where the difficulty is attributed to the husband rather than the wife. The same limit applies to both. This is for two people who both want a fair outcome, and not for a house where one person is afraid of the other.

If a wife fears high-handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do

Qur’an 4:128
