What the worry is not evidence of

People in this state almost always arrive with a verdict already reached about themselves. I am bad with money. I have always been like this. Other people manage.

Look at what the worry actually consists of. It is not a lack of numeracy. It is a running verbal rehearsal of things that have not happened, at times of day when nothing can be done about them, in the absence of the actual figures.

That is not a personality trait and it is not a moral category. It is a pattern of behaviour, and lesson two shows exactly what keeps it running.

It is also worth saying that the money problem itself is very often not about decisions at all. Income stops. Hours get cut. A marriage ends. Somebody gets ill. Prices move. A great deal of debt in this country arrives without anyone having done anything you could point at.

The Qur'an says something close to that and does not soften it. Loss of property is named third in a short list of things believers are told in advance they will be tested with, after fear and hunger, and the good news is given to those who are steadfast under it. It is announced as a trial rather than delivered as a verdict on the person it lands on. And elsewhere wealth itself is called a test rather than a reward, which is a sentence that cuts in both directions and so cannot be turned into an accusation about having little.
