Lesson 4 of 6 · One protected stretch of sleep

And one honest sentence

The second half of this lesson is smaller than the first and it does more than it looks like it does.

Say one true sentence about how you are, out loud, to one person. Not a full account and not an explanation. One sentence.

I am not doing well. I have been crying every day. I do not feel like myself and it has been three weeks.

The reason this matters is in lesson five. What keeps this going is not the feeling, it is the silence around the feeling, and the silence is held in place by the belief that a good mother would not be saying this. One sentence to one person cuts that.

Pick the person for whether they will hear it rather than for how close they are. A midwife, a health visitor and a GP have all heard it before and none of them will be shocked. A sister who tells you to be grateful is the wrong person for this particular sentence, and that is about her and not about you.

The report below is here for its opening sentence and for what happened next, rather than for its subject matter. A woman came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and prefaced the most embarrassing question she could have asked with the words: Allah is not shy of the truth. What she got back was plain and practical and had no shame in it anywhere. The sentence gets said, and it gets answered.
