One question, once, to somebody qualified. Not a debate with a relative.

Repairing after you get it wrong

10 minutes or less

Go back to the child when you are calm. The same day.
Say what you did, without a but. I shouted, and that was not right.
Do not ask them to say it is fine and do not explain what they did to cause it.
Then move on. A repair that is followed by a lecture is not a repair.

If it does not work

If this feels like it undermines your authority, notice that the research points the other way, and that a child who has seen a repair learns how to make one.
