If the second describes you, the picture often lifts a fair way once the attention difficulties are being managed and the daily experience of falling short stops piling up. If it is the first, treating the ADHD alone will leave the depression sitting where it was. Worth saying out loud which one it feels like from the inside, because your sense of the order things happened in is information nobody else has.
God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak (Quran 4:28). Being made in need of lightening is the ordinary human condition, not the mark of a failure.

A meta-analysis of cognitive behavioural treatments for adult ADHD found meaningful reductions in ADHD symptoms and in the difficulties that travel with them, compared with control conditions. So a diagnosis opens onto real options that are not medication. The pooled trials vary in quality and in what they compared against, which tends to flatter effect sizes a little.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
While the thing causing the misery is still running, treating the misery alone is uphill work.
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder was built partly to keep the bipolar label off children whose future nobody can yet see. Worth remembering when that word lands on a family's paperwork: it describes now, and it does not settle later.
Strategies for ADHD are visible. A timer on the table, a list on the wall, an alarm going off in a meeting. If someone has not yet made peace with having ADHD, each of those is an announcement, and it will quietly get dropped.
Find out what they have tried before that did not work. It saves everybody from a plan that failed this person two years ago.
