Parents can read a caution or a suspension as proof of a moral problem, when the honesty in the room points the other way. Instead of a lecture, practise the missing step out loud: what else could you have said, and what were the next three things that would have happened. Doing that a few times builds a habit their brain does not hand them for free.
Man is ever hasty (Quran 17:11). Haste is named there as a general human trait rather than as a flaw in one child.
Yet man prays for harm, just as he prays for good: man is ever hasty

A review of the cognitive neuroscience of ADHD sets out what is known about the thinking systems involved and how far it has translated into diagnosis and treatment, which is less far than commonly assumed. So this is a reasonable account of the difficulty rather than a settled explanation of any particular incident. The review does not deal with honesty as such.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Thinking several steps ahead is the part that arrives late here, not knowing right from wrong.
Anger and grief often arrive with a late diagnosis, especially once treatment starts working and you see what you could have been doing all along. That reaction is not ingratitude. It needs room.
If thoughts of ending your life turn up, tell someone that day. Do not wait to see whether they pass, and do not wait until you can explain them properly.
Plenty of people with ADHD do far better in hands-on work than in another four years of sitting in a classroom. Wanting a trade is a reasonable read of your own mind, not giving up.
