Keep it light and short, let them play both parts, and be the one who gets it wrong sometimes so it does not feel like a test. Pick the situation that actually went badly this week rather than a general lesson about being kind. Then expect to do it again in a fortnight, because this kind of learning fades and returns with practice rather than arriving once and staying.
He forgot and We found him lacking in constancy (Quran 20:115). Forgetting and needing to come back to a thing is placed in the human story from the start, so repeating a lesson is not a sign of failure.

A meta-analysis of parenting and family environment concluded that parenting influences the development of self-regulation, while being clear that the design cannot show parenting causes ADHD. That supports practice at home as something that shapes skills without making anyone responsible for the condition. It did not test role play as a method.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Doing the thing in a safe rehearsal builds a response that is available in the moment, which advice alone does not.
There is a real difference between a person who will not start and a person who cannot get started, and with ADHD it is nearly always the second.
A child who is tall for their age gets treated as older, and with ADHD their self-management may be running years behind. Pitch what you expect to the skills in front of you rather than to the height.
If you reach the bottom of a page and nothing has stayed, reading it again more slowly usually will not fix it. Change something about how you are reading instead.
