Ask the parents to walk you through the last three. What set it off, how long it ran, what stopped it, what the child was like an hour afterwards. You are listening for the shape of the ending rather than the noise at the beginning. Frustration that peaks and fades, a long unreachable rage, and calm refusal that grows when you push back all point in different directions.
'He taught Adam all the names' (Quran 2:31). Being able to name what is in front of you is spoken of here as a gift, and telling one kind of storm from another is that gift doing quiet work.
He taught Adam all the names [of things], then He showed them to the angels and said, ‘Tell me the names of these if you truly [think you can].’

A meta-analysis of young people with ADHD found impairment across several domains of emotion regulation, not only attention and activity. That supports treating the outburst as part of the condition rather than as bad behaviour bolted on top of it. It compares groups, though, so it cannot tell you which of these three children is sitting in your room.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The same behaviour can be running on different fuel, and the fuel shows itself in how the behaviour stops.
Where the outbursts involve real danger to the child or to anyone else, safety planning comes before any of this careful sorting.
Keep the tasks short, a couple of minutes each, with results back the same day. A long test given to a child who cannot sustain attention measures how long they can last, not the thing you were trying to measure.
Much of the symptom wording was written with children in mind. If a question sounds like it is about someone climbing the furniture, translate it into your adult life rather than answering no.
It runs the other way as well. Among children referred for dyslexia, a sizeable minority also have ADHD and many have coordination difficulties too. Whatever is written on the referral, treat it as one part of the picture.
