Extended release preparations are built to cover eight to twelve hours from whenever they are taken, so a late start pushes the whole thing into the evening. Moving to the same time every morning fixes a good share of these complaints. If sleep is still poor after that, say so, because ADHD often comes with a body clock that runs late anyway and the medicine can sharpen the effect.

God determines the division of night and day (Quran 73:20). Working with the shape of the day rather than against it is a sensible way to take a medicine that runs on hours.

۞إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَيِ ٱلَّيۡلِ وَنِصۡفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحۡصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ فَٱقۡرَءُواْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرۡضَىٰ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضۡرِبُونَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يَبۡتَغُونَ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَٰتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَٱقۡرَءُواْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنۡهُۚ وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقۡرِضُواْ ٱللَّهَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنࣰ اۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُواْ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنۡ خَيۡرࣲ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيۡرࣰ ا وَأَعۡظَمَ أَجۡرࣰ اۚ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِيمُۢ
[Prophet], your Lord is well aware that you sometimes spend nearly two-thirds of the night at prayer––sometimes half, sometimes a third––as do some of your followers. God determines the division of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to keep a measure of it and He has relented towards all of you, so recite as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that some of you will be sick, some of you travelling through the land seeking God’s bounty, some of you fighting in God’s way: recite as much as is easy for you, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and make God a good loan. Whatever good you store up for yourselves will be improved and increased for you. Ask God for His forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful

A randomised crossover trial of once daily long acting methylphenidate against three times daily dosing showed the long acting form working across the day in both laboratory and natural settings, which is what makes the timing of that single dose so consequential. The trial was about symptom control rather than sleep. What it supports is simply that these formulations act over a long and predictable stretch of hours.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The dose covers a fixed stretch of hours, so the hour you take it decides the hour it wears off.
A nerve cell spends its life adding up. Signals arrive along its branches, the body of the cell totals them, and at one particular point it either fires or it does not.
Writing 'do not substitute' on a prescription tells the pharmacist what to hand over. It does not tell an insurer to pay for it, and that surprise at the counter is where a lot of prescriptions quietly get abandoned.
More of the medicine is not automatically better. What you are looking for is a level that sits inside the working range, and going past it usually brings side effects rather than sharper thinking.
