Noradrenaline at the front of the brain helps a signal stand out from the background noise, so lifting it steadies working memory and attention. Stimulants move dopamine as well, and that second lever is usually why they feel stronger. Knowing which lever is being pulled makes the first few weeks easier to read, because you stop waiting for a stimulant sensation from a medicine that does not produce one.

A review of atomoxetine in children and adolescents found it did better than placebo, was generally well tolerated, and was not inferior to immediate-release methylphenidate across the trials covered. Not inferior to the immediate-release form is a narrower claim than matching a modern long-acting stimulant.
