Nobody has to call it mindfulness for it to work like mindfulness. Hours of low demand attention outdoors, with nothing much required of you, is the same thing wearing different clothes. If someone already has a version of this in their life, protect it rather than replacing it with a proper practice they will drop in a fortnight. Say out loud that it counts, because people often assume it does not.
He watered their flocks for them, withdrew into the shade, and prayed (Quran 28:24). Sitting quietly out of doors after effort is given as a whole scene, not as time wasted.

A home based activity programme for mothers at risk of postnatal depression was tested mainly for whether they could live with it, and it proved workable and acceptable. It was a pilot, not powered to show symptoms changing. Acceptability is the thing it demonstrates, which is the same thing at stake when you let someone keep their own version.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
You keep doing the version that already fits your life, and the version you keep doing is the one that helps.
You do not need greenery for outside to help. Snow, grey sky, bare trees, a car park at dusk. Getting out still does something.
End a session with a few minutes of sitting still. The styles that close with quiet seem to help most with the pause before reacting.
Five minutes of moving about sharpens concentration enough to notice. You do not need a session, you need a lap of the building.
