That gives a clear answer where there is a substance history in the house, or a worry about tablets going missing at school. Say plainly that a non-stimulant is a real option rather than a consolation prize, and say just as plainly that stimulants generally do more for the core symptoms. Both facts belong in the same conversation.

'weigh with accurate scales: that is better and fairer in the end' (Quran 17:35). Weighing a real risk accurately is a different thing from refusing a whole class of medicine because of it.

A follow-up using data from a large randomised trial, with methods designed to handle confounding, found stimulant treatment was not associated with more substance use later on. That concerns treated patients rather than diversion or misuse by other people. So the difference between classes stays a fair basis for choosing when there is risk in the household, while the fear about the patient's own future use has been tested and not supported.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The risk of misuse follows the pathway a drug reaches, so drugs that avoid it carry less.
A short acting dose lasts around four to six hours in most people, and bodies vary a great deal around that. Some clear it quickly and feel almost nothing, some clear it slowly and feel every side effect at a small dose.
When someone worries that the strength of their tablet might vary a little, the first question is how wide the safe band is for that particular medicine. For most psychiatric drugs the band is generous, and small differences never reach the person at all.
The skin patch comes with two things worth knowing before you start. Take it off several hours before bedtime or it keeps delivering and sleep goes, and around one person in six gets a rash bad enough to stop.
