A second long acting dose in the evening will still be working at midnight, which is how someone ends up studying well and sleeping badly. A short acting methylphenidate type drug clears faster, so the evening can be covered without eating into the night. It is a useful detail to raise with a prescriber, and the decision stays theirs.

'do not enter all by one gate' (Quran 12:67). Two different forms doing two different jobs is an ordinary sort of prudence.

Direct comparisons between these drugs are scarcer than you would expect. One systematic review compared the competing medications for adult ADHD indirectly, precisely because head to head trials do not exist, and offered that as a basis for ranking the options. Indirect comparison is a reasonable method and a weaker one than testing two drugs against each other, so your own notes over a fortnight still count for something.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A drug that leaves your system sooner can cover the evening without still being there at bedtime.
Watch sleep closely for the first fortnight, and never add an evening dose on your own initiative.
Do not compare your dose with anybody else's. Two milligrams of one medicine and a hundred milligrams of another can both be perfectly ordinary, because strength per milligram differs from molecule to molecule.
A nerve cell spends its life adding up. Signals arrive along its branches, the body of the cell totals them, and at one particular point it either fires or it does not.
Writing 'do not substitute' on a prescription tells the pharmacist what to hand over. It does not tell an insurer to pay for it, and that surprise at the counter is where a lot of prescriptions quietly get abandoned.
