The release pattern sets how high the level climbs, how quickly it gets there, and how long it holds. For stimulants that decides whether cover reaches the end of a school or working day. When something shifts after a pharmacy switch, look at the formulation before concluding the medicine has stopped working, and be just as careful not to wave through a genuinely new molecule as merely a new version.

Choosing between options is harder than it looks, because the head to head trials often do not exist. A systematic review of medicines for adult ADHD had to compare them indirectly, which gives a reasonable basis for ranking rather than a firm answer about which suits a given person. Indirect comparison is a proper method with real limits, so a ranking is a place to start a conversation and not a verdict.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
How a drug is released decides the shape of the day on it, even when the drug itself is unchanged.
An immediate release dose gives you the whole thing at once: quick to start, strong at the top, gone within a few hours. If that is what you take, put the demanding things inside the hours it actually covers.
Licences start at six years old, and that number comes from how trials have to be run rather than from a safety finding. Younger children do get treated where the case is strong.
Parents and teachers warm to a plan that includes something they do, rather than a prescription on its own. That is not a scientific argument and it still matters.
