Worth being able to say plainly, because most people are carrying something vaguer and more frightening than that. It also sets a fair expectation. The tablet raises the chance of a signal landing. It does not install a mood, and it does not do the parts of getting better that involve sleep, movement, people and what you do with your days.
'God comes between a man and his heart' (Quran 8:24). A mechanism you can describe in one sentence is not the whole of what moves in a person.

An online programme combining behavioural activation, cognitive restructuring and mindfulness reduced depressive symptoms compared with a waiting list in a randomised trial. That is a study of the other half of the work rather than of the tablets. It belongs here as a reminder that the parts a medicine does not reach are not vague self help; they have been tested in their own right.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Knowing roughly what a treatment does makes it easier to stay with it and to notice what actually changes.
If a medicine leaves you wired, restless or with a pulse that will not settle, report it rather than tolerating it quietly.
With the fast acting treatments, the plan for what happens afterwards matters as much as the treatment itself.
Sometimes the honest answer is that there is nothing in your surroundings to feel good about. Changing them counts as treatment, not as running away.
