A whole evening can go into recording an evening. It is worth asking, with no scolding in it, whether you were there for the thing you now have a photograph of.

A conceptual review of cognitive offloading, meaning handing mental work to a device, argues that it can either relieve the load or add to it depending on how it is arranged. Giving your memories to a camera roll is one version of that arrangement, though the review is about cognitive work in general rather than about photographing your life. It is a frame for thinking about the trade, not evidence that recording an evening costs you the evening.
