Put the whole thing in one place: the name and dose, the surgery or clinic, how far ahead a repeat has to go in, what happens when you travel, who to contact if you run out on a Saturday. If a parent has been quietly handling all this, spend a few months doing it together before it changes hands. The gap tends to show itself at the worst possible moment, in a new city, with no idea how to register anywhere.

A Cochrane review examined automated telephone systems that deliver messages and collect information between appointments, either supplementing contact with clinicians or replacing some of it. It is about how services keep in touch, not about a young person taking over their own repeats. What it illustrates is that even well resourced services build the routine reminding into a system rather than trusting anyone to remember.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Anything that has always been done for you stays invisible until it fails, so writing it out is how it becomes something you can learn.
The planning part of the brain is the last to finish growing, and it keeps developing well into the twenties. Eighteen is a legal age rather than a developmental one.
Keep both tools, and settle in advance where each thing goes. The deciding is what wears you out, so make that decision once instead of forty times a week.
When something has become impossible, start far below it. Sitting in the parked car with the engine off is a real first step, and it is the one that gets somewhere.
