For someone who has just come apart, a fresh demand can restart the same collapse, so a few months with nothing scheduled is sometimes the intervention rather than the absence of one. Put an end date on it and a small check in, monthly is plenty, so that it does not quietly turn into five years without anyone noticing. Then make the next step small enough to be boring.
If the debtor is in difficulty, then delay things until matters become easier for him (Quran 2:280). Delay is written into the arrangement as the right response to difficulty, not as a concession granted grudgingly.

A Cochrane review examined personalised care planning, where the person and the professional together name the problems and agree specific goals, actions and points to review them. It comes from long term illness care rather than from young people taking time out, so nothing in it is about bridge years. The part that carries is structural: a plan with agreed dates in it stays a plan, and one without them tends to dissolve into drift.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Rest belongs to the plan when it has been chosen and given an end, and stops belonging to it when nobody ever looks at it again.
If the doing very little comes with hopelessness or thoughts of not being here, that needs proper assessment rather than more time.
If you have been the one holding someone's schedule, meals and reminders together, do not put all of it down on the day they leave. Pass it over a piece at a time, each with a date on it.
Instead of guessing what pulls you away, catch it happening. Keep a scrap of paper beside you for a week and note whatever took you off, at the moment it takes you off.
The classroom is the strongest place to help and most clinicians cannot get into one. That is a reason to work well in the next best place, not a reason to give up.
