Set it for the length of the task, or for the length you can stand, and leave it where your eye falls. A digital countdown asks you to work out what nine minutes forty means, and most of us never bother. The physical kind just sits there on the desk. Free versions on a screen do the same job, though a real one is harder to close in a tab. Nobody is too old for one of these, and using one is not childish.
I will bring it to you in the twinkling of an eye (Quran 27:40). The right capability turns a heavy task into a quick one, and reaching for a tool that suits you is no less honourable for being easy.

قَالَ ٱلَّذِي عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ أَنَا۠ ءَاتِيكَ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَن يَرۡتَدَّ إِلَيۡكَ طَرۡفُكَۚ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهُ مُسۡتَقِرًّا عِندَهُۥ قَالَ هَٰذَا مِن فَضۡلِ رَبِّي لِيَبۡلُوَنِيٓ ءَأَشۡكُرُ أَمۡ أَكۡفُرُۖ وَمَن شَكَرَ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ رَبِّي غَنِيࣱّ كَرِيمࣱ
but one of them who had some knowledge of the Scripture said, ‘I will bring it to you in the twinkling of an eye.’ When Solomon saw it set before him, he said, ‘This is a favour from my Lord, to test whether I am grateful or not: if anyone is grateful, it is for his own good, if anyone is ungrateful, then my Lord is self-sufficient and most generous.’

A systematic review of mobile apps and text message based health interventions noted that an enormous number of apps are available compared with the evidence supporting them. That is the caution to keep with any timer app you download: being available and pleasant to use is not the same as having been tested. Judge it the plain way instead, by whether your weeks look different after a month of it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A shrinking patch of colour is something you notice without trying, which is exactly what a countdown you have to read is not.
Good help leaves you more able to do it yourself next time. If the whole thing only works while the other person is in the room, something has gone sideways.
A young person hears the fear in a house even when nobody says anything. If the adults are frightened about their future, they usually take that fear as a verdict on themselves.
Praise the sitting down at the desk, not only the finished piece. If recognition only shows up when something is completed, most weeks it never shows up at all.
