Worth sitting with for a moment, because it takes risk out of the picture entirely. There is nothing to lose by waiting, and the near one still feels bigger. That is temporal discounting in one line, and once you have felt it in a made up example you start noticing it in real ones: the deposit, the appointment, the small task now that would save you hours in March.
You will progress from stage to stage (Quran 84:19). The person collecting that money at the end of the year is you, further along, and worth counting as real.

A methodological analysis warns that choosing the smaller sooner option can reflect what a person wants rather than how impatient they are, so the tasks used to measure this may be confusing motivation with impatience. That is a caution about the science and about you. Preferring the money now does not prove a deficit, though it does show that distance in time is doing something to the value.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Time on its own changes what something is worth to you, even when nothing else about it differs.
Keep consequences for the sake of honesty, but let praise and reward do most of the work. Punishment can tell a child what to stop and it cannot tell them what to do instead.
If an hour of real work reliably eats two hours of clock, book two. You do not have to become a better estimator to end up with a schedule that works.
The more you have to look up before you can begin, the further the real time drifts from your guess. Every search is also a door left open, and some of them lead somewhere else entirely.
