It is worth naming, because most people have been told the opposite about themselves for years. The scramble is what happens when the deadline is the only thing that ever made the task feel real. Look for the part you can move: the date you agree to, a checkpoint before it, a person who will ask. Blaming the version of you sitting there at eleven at night has never once produced a finished report.
'Man is ever hasty' (Quran 17:11). Urgency skews what looks worth doing, so the state you are in at eleven at night is not the one to judge yourself from.

A meta-analysis pooling 691 correlations found that procrastination goes with how unpleasant a task feels, how capable of it a person believes they are, and impulsiveness. In other words, the distance and the discomfort do most of the explaining. It is correlational, so it describes what travels with putting things off rather than proving what causes it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The pressure that finally makes it feel real only exists once it is too late to use.
The towel left on the floor is the model. Tomorrow it is cold and unpleasant to use, and that is the whole of it. Short wait, happens every time, nothing terrible.
At a check-in, only look. Where am I, what has slipped, what have I still not heard back on. Skim the inbox without opening anything.
Thursday night goes badly, you swear at yourself, and you mean every word. Next quarter the same thing happens. That is not you failing to learn. It is a lesson that cannot survive the distance.
