Write what has to happen and roughly in what order, and keep it where you will see it. Two things come out of that. You have made one deliberate decision about the day rather than letting each hour pick itself, and you have something to check against at noon, which is when the drift is still fixable.
We have explained everything in detail (Quran 17:12), the same verse that gives night and day for counting the years. Setting things out clearly is treated as a help, not a fuss.

We made the night and the day as two signs, then darkened the night and made the daylight for seeing, for you to seek your Lord’s bounty and to know how to count the years and calculate. We have explained everything in detail

Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
In 114 undergraduates, the relation between putting things off and attention difficulties ran through executive functions, particularly time management, organisation and problem solving. That is a cross sectional student sample, so it cannot show that improving organisation reduces delay. It does place organising and planning inside the difficulty rather than outside it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A plan on paper stays put while your memory of it quietly rearranges itself.
The dreaming is not the problem. It is that bills, forms and renewal dates are dull enough to stop registering at all, and those are the things that actually damage a life.
Spotting on day one that a procedure is pointless is a real skill. Saying so in the first meeting is the part that costs people the job.
A clever workaround can hide a difficulty for years. A child who memorises what he cannot read looks fine, right up until the amount to be read grows past what memory can carry.
