Twenty five minutes on, five off, or forty and ten, or whatever suits the work. What you are after is a short enough run that you can tell from inside it whether it is going well. Long unbroken blocks hide the drift until the day has gone, and by then the only feedback available is disappointment.
You will progress from stage to stage (Quran 84:19). Moving through something in stages is offered there as the ordinary shape of a life, not a concession.

Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
A theory driven meta-analysis of mind wandering found that it happens more, and hurts performance more, when task demands are high. Long unstructured stretches are exactly where attention has the least to hold on to. The analysis is about attention regulation in general rather than a trial of working in intervals, so it explains the difficulty more than it endorses a particular timer.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Short pieces let you notice you have wandered while the wandering is still small.
The timer you will actually use is the one that takes two seconds. A dial you twist beats an app with four taps, every time, whatever the app can do.
Every trait worth having here arrives with its twin. A love of the offbeat and a real problem with deadlines are the same wiring seen from two sides.
Keep consequences for the sake of honesty, but let praise and reward do most of the work. Punishment can tell a child what to stop and it cannot tell them what to do instead.
