Two moves reliably make it worse: sinking into shame until you cannot look at the person, and defending yourself as though nothing had been dropped. What helps is plainer than either. Say what happened without the commentary about your character, say what can still be done, ask what would help now. Then go back later and look at where the reminder failed, because that part is fixable, while your memory on the day was not.
Whenever you forget, remember your Lord and say, 'May my Lord guide me closer to what is right' (Quran 18:24). And you will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend (Quran 33:5). Forgetting is met with a next step rather than a verdict.

In one experiment, people who had just been made to exert self control were worse at carrying out an intention when the cue for it arrived, which suggests that remembering to act draws on the same limited resource as acting does. A systematic review also found ADHD symptoms are consistently associated with mind wandering, described there as internal distractibility. Neither study says anything about repairing the aftermath. They are here for a narrower point: the miss has ordinary mechanisms behind it, and reading it as a moral failure misreads what happened.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Shame turns a small piece of bad logistics into something you would rather not think about, and not thinking about it is what stops you repairing the system that let you down.
If the misses are costing you your job or your closest relationships, or the shame afterwards is settling into something heavier and longer lasting, that is worth taking to a professional rather than carrying alone.
Notice how often a forgotten job turns up in the shower, or halfway up a flight of stairs. That is not coincidence: when nothing is holding your attention, the things you meant to do float up.
Saying it is done when it is not is a common next step, and it makes more sense than it looks. The lie is rarely about the parcel, it is a way out of the look on somebody's face.
Most of what we call memory looks backwards. The kind that actually runs your week is the other sort: a plan that has to show up in your head at the one moment you could still act on it.
