Knowing about a deadline does almost nothing. Feeling it does the work, and feeling arrives through detail. The lamp still on, what is open on the screen, whether you have eaten, what you will have to tell people. Stay with both pictures long enough for the difference to be uncomfortable, then go and do the smallest piece.
You humans, toiling laboriously towards your Lord, will meet Him (Quran 84:6). What lies ahead is what gives this evening's ordinary effort its weight.

Imaging meta-analyses found that keeping the future in mind and valuing delayed rewards depend on overlapping brain systems, which makes this look like a capacity people differ in rather than a matter of willpower. That is a reason to practise the simulation deliberately. The evidence is indirect and it does not compare vivid imagining against any other method.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Information about the future leaves you where you are, but a feeling about it moves you.
Sometimes both roads carry a cost and neither will feel good. Accept that first, then choose, rather than searching for the option that comes without a sting.
When you are the one helping, let the tone stay warm and a little funny. A person can hear a hard truth about their own week if it does not arrive solemnly.
