That turns a stuck task back into a conversation, which is where it belongs. Say plainly that the unpainted wall does not trouble you, ask what it means to them, and see whether you can settle who does what and by when. Every trick for getting started assumes you want the thing done. None of them work on a task you never signed up for.
We have assigned a law and a path to each of you (Quran 5:48). Two people who share a home each still answer for their own path, and it helps to say aloud which is which.
المائدة
وَأَنزَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ مُصَدِّقࣰ ا لِّمَا بَيۡنَ يَدَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَمُهَيۡمِنًا عَلَيۡهِۖ فَٱحۡكُم بَيۡنَهُم بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡ عَمَّا جَآءَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّۚ لِكُلࣲّ جَعَلۡنَا مِنكُمۡ شِرۡعَةࣰ وَمِنۡهَاجࣰ اۚ وَلَوۡ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمۡ أُمَّةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ فِي مَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمۡۖ فَٱسۡتَبِقُواْ ٱلۡخَيۡرَٰتِۚ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ جَمِيعࣰ ا فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ فِيهِ تَخۡتَلِفُونَ
We sent to you [Muhammad] the Scripture with the truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and with final authority over them: so judge between them according to what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the truth that has come to you. We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about

A meta-analysis combining planned behaviour and self-determination research found that motivation which feels self-chosen predicts intention and follow-through better than motivation coming from outside. That fits the idea that an unagreed task will keep stalling. It measured health behaviours, so applying it to a shared household job is a reasonable step rather than a tested one.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Nothing gets started reliably when the person doing it never chose it.
If reminders, other people's deadlines and a bit of chivvying are what keep you moving, you are allowed to keep them. Inner drive arrives later for some of us, and taking the scaffolding away early does not hurry it along.
Sitting exactly halfway between two options is its own kind of exhausting, and it produces nothing. If you have been weighing something for weeks, the weighing has quietly become the activity.
When you finish the dull task, give yourself something you actually like. A reward you do not really want does no work at all.
