Very few lives need only six good hours. Evenings hold homework, cooking, driving, tempers and the people you live with, and those hours get written off as personality when they are really the hours with no cover. Noting roughly when the drop happens, for a week before the next appointment, gives a prescriber something to work with instead of 'it wears off sometimes'.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'There is no blame attached to the weak, the sick, and those who have no means' (Quran 9:91). A difficult evening once the cover has run out is a fact about timing rather than something to feel guilty about.

The shape over time differs a lot between medicines, and expectations should be set to match. A clinical and pharmacological review of atomoxetine describes benefit that builds gradually over weeks instead of appearing within hours, which is a genuine difference from stimulants. It reviews one non stimulant rather than comparing durations across products. The general lesson holds: the time course belongs to the drug rather than measuring the person taking it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Naming the hour the cover ends turns a vague complaint into something a prescriber can adjust.
You will hear confident claims in both directions: that stimulants permanently rewire a child's brain, and that they leave nothing behind at all. The honest position sits between the two, and it helps to know which parts are settled.
Wanting to try everything else first is a normal instinct and worth taking seriously. It is still fair to ask why we would have a child squint for a year before trying glasses.
None of the non-stimulants should be stopped suddenly. Guanfacine and clonidine began life as blood pressure medicines, and taking them away all at once can send blood pressure sharply back up.
