Ask for them as something that helps you, because it is true and it also lands better: five minutes on Tuesday and Thursday keeps me pointed at the right things. Shorter interval, less room for drift, and each one hands you a near deadline instead of a distant one. Most managers say yes, and the ones who cannot usually offer something else instead.
'You will progress from stage to stage' (Quran 84:19). Work is described as moving in stages, and a check-in only marks where one stage ends.

A meta-analysis of 65 randomised trials found interventions built on self determination theory changed health behaviour, with autonomous motivation and perceived competence acting as the mechanisms in between. That was health rather than workplace check-ins, so it is applied loosely here. It does suggest asking for the arrangement yourself, rather than having it placed on you, matters for whether it keeps working.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The gap between check-ins is where drift quietly accumulates.
The conversation only counts if the decisions end up in the calendar. 'You take Tuesday, I'll take Thursday' has to be written down or it did not really happen.
Smoking sends its bill decades later. Homework skipped at fourteen lands at university applications. January's receipt matters in April of the following year. The few seconds of relief are always right here.
Ask people how it went. How was that meeting, how am I doing, what did you make of it. Nobody enjoys asking, and the information is not available any other way.
