One man working from home lost his evenings this way for years, and it was his relationship rather than his employer that paid for it. If the true limit is late, set an earlier one with something real attached: somebody expecting the file, a meal you will sit down to, an alarm that ends work and a room you leave. What makes a deadline work is that crossing it costs something.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of bedtime procrastination set out its correlates and its association with not getting enough sleep, and identified it as worth intervening on. Separately, an experiment found that after five nights of restricted sleep, young adults with and without ADHD were worse at reading emotional expressions on faces. That gives one concrete cost of working into the night, though the experiment was small and short and measured a laboratory task rather than an evening at home.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A deadline only pulls when it is close, and one you do not believe in never gets close.
A three o'clock appointment half an hour away is a half past two appointment. Put the true start time in and let the calendar hold it, rather than asking yourself to work it out on the day.
Think of a calendar as memory kept outside your head rather than as a test of discipline. Its whole job is to answer what you should be doing now, so that you do not have to work it out.
Put the rules up on the wall where everyone can see them, and put the child's own version on a card on their desk.
