Running from one near disaster to the next burns exactly the abilities you need in order to dig out: planning, holding a thought long enough to use it, deciding what comes first. So the days get longer, less gets finished, and the pile starts to look like proof that you should push harder still. Saying the loop out loud is often what finally lets a person take an evening off.
God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak (Quran 4:28). Being limited is named as the ordinary human condition that God is working with, not as your private failing.

A systematic review of burnout among doctors found it went consistently with reduced productivity, including working fewer hours and retiring early. That is this loop written across a whole workforce: exhaustion does not buy extra output, it removes output. The review covered doctors in particular and reports associations, so it cannot tell you which came first in any one person.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Being worn down eats the very skills that clearing a backlog needs, so pushing on grows the pile.
If the backlog holds things with real consequences, get someone to help you sort what can genuinely be dropped rather than deciding it alone at midnight.
There are two jobs here, not one. Free up the time, and then be able to sit in it without feeling like a fraud.
Say it, out loud if you can manage it: I am done for the day. A decision, rather than a slow guilty drift away from the desk.
Rest is not the prize waiting at the end of the work. It is part of what makes the work possible, and it does not have to be earned first.
