Once a child is understood to be choosing it, everything that follows is punishment, the arousal climbs, and the sensory difficulty gets worse. That loop breaks at the level of explanation rather than argument: what does the day look like from the inside, and what could be turned down. Teachers are mostly working outside their training here, so it lands far better as information than as criticism.
Do not use offensive nicknames for one another (Quran 49:11). The reputation a child collects in a classroom is treated there as a moral matter rather than a harmless one.
الحجرات
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا يَسۡخَرۡ قَوۡمࣱ مِّن قَوۡمٍ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونُواْ خَيۡرࣰ ا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا نِسَآءࣱ مِّن نِّسَآءٍ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُنَّ خَيۡرࣰ ا مِّنۡهُنَّۖ وَلَا تَلۡمِزُوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَلَا تَنَابَزُواْ بِٱلۡأَلۡقَٰبِۖ بِئۡسَ ٱلِٱسۡمُ ٱلۡفُسُوقُ بَعۡدَ ٱلۡإِيمَٰنِۚ وَمَن لَّمۡ يَتُبۡ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
Believers, no one group of men should jeer at another, who may after all be better than them; no one group of women should jeer at another, who may after all be better than them; do not speak ill of one another; do not use offensive nicknames for one another. How bad it is to be called a mischief-maker after accepting faith! Those who do not repent of this behaviour are evildoers

Laboratory experiments on stereotype threat found that coping with a negative expectation about your group leaves people depleted afterwards, with worse self-control and attention on unrelated tasks. Being the classroom's designated problem child is a plausible everyday version of that pressure, though these were short laboratory tasks with adults rather than children at school. A systematic review of developmental coordination disorder makes the related point that difficulties which look like not trying often have identifiable mechanisms behind them.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Treating overwhelm as defiance adds stress, and more stress makes the overwhelm worse.
If a child's behaviour is putting them or anyone else at risk, that needs handling on its own terms at the same time, not left until the sensory picture is understood.
A child who talks well, listens well and seems bright will have their reading failure read as laziness. The strengths are exactly what makes the blame stick.
Find something the child already loves, a team, an orchestra, a game, and lay their results over it. These players are strong, these ones need coaching, and none of it means the team is no good.
If a child is behind in reading, the gap rarely closes on its own with another year of the same. Asking for a proper assessment now is kinder than hoping that maturity will do the work.
