Once you can see the sequence, you can step in near the beginning instead of managing the wreckage at the end. Say it out loud with the child, without blame, so they start to recognise the shape in themselves: this is the bit where it feels like there is loads of time. Recognising it is the first thing they can actually do about it.
Do not say of anything, I will do that tomorrow (Quran 18:23). The verse names the assumption at the start of the sequence rather than the panic at the end of it.

A systematic review confirms that putting things off is frequently seen alongside ADHD symptoms, while being clear that the consistency of the link and the mechanisms behind it are still unsettled. So the pattern is well documented and its causes are not. Expect the crisis at the end to be common, and be careful about explanations offered with too much confidence.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A pattern you can see coming can be interrupted early, while the same pattern unnamed only ever gets handled once it has already arrived.
Look back over your own history for the times you were knocked down and started something anyway. That pattern is common with ADHD, and it is easy to miss while you are busy counting the failures.
If reading has always been slow and effortful, that is worth looking at in its own right. Dyslexia and ADHD turn up together far more often than chance would give, and they need different help.
Knowing that leaving it until Thursday went badly last month does not change what Monday feels like. The memory is there, but it turns up flat, with none of the pressure still attached to it.
