A handout would carry the same words, but writing it themselves does two extra things. It puts the sequence somewhere they can look again when step one is finished and step two has evaporated, and it tells you the instruction actually arrived, because they could not have written it otherwise. It also keeps the child the one doing the work rather than the one being managed.
Night prayer makes a deeper impression (Quran 73:6). How a thing is done changes how deeply it lands, which is the difference between hearing three steps and writing them.

In a trial with 557 young adults, spelling out a situation and tying an action to it beat a general plan with nothing to hang it on. The study was about fruit and vegetables, not classroom worksheets, and the young adults were making their own plans rather than writing down someone else's. The transferable part is narrow and worth holding lightly: a plan tied to something specific outperforms a vague one.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A sequence you can look at again does not have to be held in a head that keeps letting go of it.
For a child who finds handwriting painful, let them type it or draw it, since the point is the record and not the penmanship.
If a young person hears your suggestion of a planner as one more instruction, they will refuse it, and the refusal is about who is in charge rather than about diaries. Hand over the choice of format and the choice of what goes in.
If a calendar feels like something parents and teachers made you carry, it stays theirs and you keep putting it down. The question worth answering is whose life gets easier when it works.
Moving between lessons is where things fall apart, so plan the move out loud before it happens. What to bring, where to go, and who will be waiting.
