Listening on its own asks a child to do nothing visible for a long stretch, and attention quietly drains away with nobody able to tell. A pen moving keeps hands and eyes tied to what you are saying, and it turns something invisible into something you can spot from the front of the room. When the writing stops you have your cue to go over, well before the whole lesson has been missed.
Stand before God in devotion (Quran 2:238). Attention is easier to keep when the body has been given something to do with it.
البقرة
حَٰفِظُواْ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَوَٰتِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلۡوُسۡطَىٰ وَقُومُواْ لِلَّهِ قَٰنِتِينَ
Take care to do your prayers, praying in the best way, and stand before God in devotion

Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
A meta analysis and meta regression of habit formation interventions found they can raise the automaticity of a behaviour and picked apart which components carry that effect. It is the case for making note taking a standing routine rather than a request repeated daily. The behaviour studied was physical activity in adults, not note taking in classrooms, so the principle travels further than the specifics do.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Attention holds better when there is something to do with it, and a stopped pen shows you the drift while it is still small.
A child whose writing is slow or effortful may lose the lesson to the notes, so let them capture less, or capture it another way.
The long reason why is doing less than you hope. Give the instruction, give one short line of why if it helps, and let that be the end of it.
A calendar that catches only some of your commitments is more dangerous than no calendar at all. You look at Thursday, see a clear afternoon, say yes, and only later meet the thing that never got written down.
You do not have to use it perfectly for it to help. Using it half the time makes your week roughly half better, and that is a real gain rather than a consolation prize.
