The glancing matters as much as the writing, since a list written at eight and never looked at again is just a piece of paper. Carrying items forward is the part people skip, and it is what stops three forgotten things becoming a backlog that nobody can face by half term. Unfinished is fine. Unnoticed is what does the damage.
No leaf falls without His knowledge (Quran 6:59). Nothing slipping through unnoticed is the picture, and a carried-forward list is a small human copy of it.

In 114 undergraduates, executive functions including time management and organisation sat between attention problems and procrastination, which is to say the handling of work is where the difficulty shows up rather than in willingness. An outside list takes some of that handling on. It is a cross-sectional study in students, so it shows things occurring together and cannot say what causes what.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A list you keep looking at does the remembering for you, and moving things forward keeps them from vanishing quietly.
Writing the list is the easy half. If twelve things are down on paper and you still cannot move, the missing skill is choosing, not capturing.
Praise the sitting down at the desk, not only the finished piece. If recognition only shows up when something is completed, most weeks it never shows up at all.
If a year out is coming, call it a bridge rather than a gap. A gap is a hole in a record. A bridge is going somewhere.
