The difference is audible before it is anything else: the voice steadier, the sentence shorter, an actual ask at the end of it. I am angry, and what I want is for you to tell me when you are going to be late. Getting there is not about being calmer than you are, it is about finding what the anger is protecting and putting that in the sentence too. Couples often notice this shift long before they notice anything else changing.

In a study within a clinical trial cohort, being able to control how anger was expressed, rather than either bottling it or letting it out, went with a stronger sense of coherence and better quality of life, while both holding it in and venting it ran the other way. So the useful middle is real. This was a snapshot of people at one point in time, so it describes a pattern rather than proving which came first.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Anger with a request in it gives the other person something they can do, and anger without one only gives them something to survive.
If anger in your home has ever become frightening or physical, that needs proper help rather than better phrasing.
If all you can say is that you want to get away, that is already information. Nobody moves away from nothing, so somewhere in there is something that felt hard.
Let what they say land in you before you answer. The word that catches somewhere in your own chest is usually the live one.
When someone finally gets one true word out about how they feel, resist explaining it to them. Ask what that word is like from the inside and let them find the rest.
