A comment about the washing up does not floor anyone by itself. It floors you because of what you heard underneath it, something along the lines of 'I am failing at this' or 'she has given up on me'. Saying that sentence out loud turns a fog you were lost inside into a claim the two of you can look at together. Very often the other person had no idea that was what landed.
God is 'aware of the most furtive of glances, and of all that hearts conceal' (Quran 40:19). The verdict you carry silently is not hidden from Him, so it can safely be said out loud to the person it concerns.

Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
A developmental review of shame, guilt and pride describes them as feelings that arise specifically from seeing yourself through someone else's eyes, which is why this particular question reaches the sore spot. It is a review of theory and developmental findings rather than a test of any technique, so take it as an account of how these emotions are shaped. It fits the everyday pattern that the wound sits in the imagined verdict rather than in the words themselves.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Naming the message you think you heard separates it from what was actually said.
When someone goes quiet and you can see they have gone inside, that is not your moment to help. Stay still and let the silence run.
Let what they say land in you before you answer. The word that catches somewhere in your own chest is usually the live one.
Say the frightened thing rather than the sharp thing. It is far more exposing and it is the only version that tends to get a kind reply.
