Areas › Your body › Grounding and settling
Having a second version matters more than which numbers you use. When one pattern does nothing, people usually conclude that breathing techniques do not work for them, and stop. The longer cycle suits some bodies better, though it needs a bit more breath to begin with, so build up to it on calm days rather than meeting it for the first time in a bad hour.
We spread out the earth (Quran 51:48). The verse goes on to say how well it was smoothed out, and lengthening a breath is a small version of giving yourself more room.

A systematic review of the interoception and heart rate variability literatures found both were associated with how well people regulate their emotions, while noting the studies are mostly cross-sectional. The association is real enough to build practices on and too weak to promise anything. Take slow breathing as a reasonable lever on a system that does relate to emotion, without expecting it to work every time.

Strength of evidence: long taught, never tested. Widely used and long taught. No trial has established that it works.
A longer, slower cycle leans the body further toward its calming branch, when you have the room for it.
Attention problems often travel with anxiety or low mood, and those two eat working memory as well. Settling that layer can make everything else look quite different.
Learn one plain standing position and keep coming back to it: feet under hips, hips under shoulders, ears above shoulders, chin drawn back a little, arms hanging.
Your settling kit should cost nothing. Tea you already buy, a photo already on your phone, an old jumper, a smooth stone, a puzzle that takes your whole attention.
