Areas › Your body › Grounding and settling
State travels ahead of words. A hard conversation an hour ago, a bad night, a piece of news you have not dealt with: any of it will be in the room whether or not you mention it. Thirty seconds of naming it to yourself is usually enough to stop it becoming the other person's to carry. If it is too big to set down, that is information about your own load rather than a failure of technique.
We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein (Quran 50:16). What you carry unspoken is already fully known, so naming it is for your sake, not for God's information.

Pooling 729 studies, a review found that people carrying chronic stress, low mood or fatigue respond differently to a fresh stressor and take longer to recover afterwards. Carry over is measurable, then, not just a feeling you have about yourself. The review is about physiology under laboratory stress rather than what colleagues or clients pick up from you.

Strength of evidence: long taught, never tested. Widely used and long taught. No trial has established that it works.
What you have not noticed in yourself still shows, and other people read it before you speak.
Steady pressure suits both directions. A weighted blanket, a firm squeeze of your own hands, lotion rubbed in with real pressure, bare feet pressed into the floor.
If your child is learning to settle, learn it alongside them rather than supervising. Parents who practise report less stress of their own and less flying off the handle.
Start with a couple of minutes of movement before any of the difficult talking. Not a warm up for its own sake: a body that has moved is easier to think in.
