It senses chemical change, runs digestion and talks to your immune system, and it is wired into the same circuits that handle fear. So the churning, the cramping and the sudden urgency are your body doing what it does under strain. Worth mentioning to a doctor, and worth not being embarrassed about.
'We know what his soul whispers to him' (Quran 50:16). What goes on inside you is known and taken seriously, including the parts nobody can see.

An experimental crossover study found that raising vagal tone, either with deep slow breathing or with stimulation, improved gut motility and reduced pain sensitivity. That is a direct demonstration that the route from breath to gut is real and quick. It was a small experimental study rather than a treatment trial, so it shows the connection rather than promising relief.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The gut sits inside the same alarm system, so it changes when the alarm goes off.
Persistent gut symptoms deserve a medical opinion as well. Do not assume it is only stress.
Try locking your ankle and holding everything rigid while you balance. You will fall over. The wobble was doing the work.
Connection settles people, but the right amount of it varies enormously. Some settle with a house full of family and some with one person and no talking at all.
When somebody tells you a practice will calm you, treat that as a hypothesis about you rather than a fact. Try it and watch what actually happens.
