It is why some people cope beautifully in a crisis and find a quiet evening unbearable, and why intimacy and slow worship are often the last things to come back after a hard few years. That is not a discipline problem. Start with stillness that has a way out of it: a short lie down with the door open, ten minutes of quiet with a familiar voice in the next room.

A meta analysis of randomised trials found that interventions which improved sleep also improved mental health, and that the size of the mental health gain tracked the size of the sleep improvement, which the authors read as support for a causal path. Rest is doing something rather than nothing. Sleep trials are not a study of intimacy or of prayer, so that part of the idea is an extension.

Going still is only restful once your body has registered that nothing needs watching, so the safety has to come first.
People carrying long term trauma often show low stress hormone levels rather than high ones. Flat and exhausted is a stress presentation too.
Not all stillness is the same. One kind is braced and wide awake. The other has gone soft and far away.
Feeling worse as things get safer is confusing, and it is common. When the guard finally comes down, whatever it was holding down gets felt.
