So do not lead with the correction. Say instead that it makes complete sense they landed there, that a child needs their parents to be good more than they need to be innocent. Sit with what would be frightening about the other version. Once the fear underneath has somewhere to go, the blame tends to loosen on its own, and none of that has to happen today.
'Who but the misguided despair of the mercy of their Lord?' (Quran 15:56). Despair about yourself is treated as a mistake rather than a clear eyed reading of the facts, even when it feels like the safer conclusion.

A meta analysis of 22 samples found that fear of receiving compassion, or of offering it to yourself, was strongly associated with poorer mental health. Put plainly, kindness itself can feel threatening to the people who most need it. The samples were cross sectional, so this describes a pattern rather than showing that the fear comes first.

When someone's shame fills the room, check your own state before you say anything. If you start to shrink, or to worry that you are handling this badly, they will feel it.
You were the child. They were the adults. Say it as often as you need to, because shame will keep quietly filing it the other way round.
When you go blank or shut down under pressure, try meeting it with 'of course I did'. That response was learned somewhere it was needed, and it is still running long after the danger passed.
