Areas › Your body › Grounding and settling
Following instructions well is a skill many people learned early, sometimes because it was not safe to do anything else. A practice made entirely of instructions can then be done perfectly and still leave you outside your own body. Doing it your own way asks a different question: not am I getting this right, but where does this want to go. Expect it to feel odd for the first minute or so.
He shaped you, formed you well (Quran 40:64). Your particular body was made deliberately, so letting it move the way it wants is not self indulgence.

It is God who has given you the earth for a dwelling place and the heavens for a canopy. He shaped you, formed you well, and provided you with good things. Such is God your Lord, so glory be to Him, the Lord of the Worlds

A network meta-analysis of physical relaxation for work stress found that several very different approaches, yoga, massage, progressive muscle relaxation and stretching, all helped, with none clearly ahead of the rest. If no single form is the winner, there is little cost in letting the person choose their own. That review compared set programmes rather than free movement, so this is an extension of it rather than a finding.

Strength of evidence: long taught, never tested. Widely used and long taught. No trial has established that it works.
Choosing the movement yourself makes you feel for what your body wants, instead of only listening for what you are told.
Picture something that could hold what you cannot deal with today. A box, a safe, a chest with a lid. You choose the size, what it is made of and where it is kept.
Once a day, run through five things in order: how your mind is, what your body feels, how the breathing is going, what the emotional weather is, and how much energy you have. Curious, not marking yourself.
Attention problems often travel with anxiety or low mood, and those two eat working memory as well. Settling that layer can make everything else look quite different.
