Which matches how it feels from inside: fine at eleven, flooded by half past, flat by two. If that is you, the aim is not to iron the swings out into nothing. It is to make them smoother and more predictable, and that is what slow breathing, sleep at roughly the same hours and an ordinary daily shape actually do. Unglamorous, and it is the part that works.
'hearts find peace in the remembrance of God' (Quran 13:28). What settles a heart is described as something regular and returned to, which is also how rhythm gets built.

A review and meta analysis found that depression is associated with reduced heart rate variability even in people without cardiovascular disease, tying mood directly to autonomic regulation. Mood and heart rhythm are genuinely linked. Which way the link runs is not settled by that finding, and describing patterns as erratic or smooth is a clinical way of reading a graph rather than a validated measure.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Predictable rhythm is easier for a body to run than constant surprise, so regularity does much of the settling for you.
If you went blank or floppy while something terrible was happening, that was your body conserving you. It is the oldest survival setting you have, not a failure of nerve.
Your stress system needs an all clear as much as it needs an alarm. What often breaks after trauma is the signal that says it is over.
