An ordinary class measures you against the shape, and that measuring is the same self driving that wore you out in the first place. The therapeutic version puts effort and ease on the same footing and asks you to feel where the balance is sitting today. A position you can breathe easily in is worth more than a deeper one you cannot.
Go at a moderate pace (Quran 31:19). A pace you can hold is what gets recommended, not the most impressive one available to you.

A comparison of yoga with conventional physical exercise argues that yoga's distinctive psychological effects come from what it adds, attention to posture and regulation of the breath, rather than from the exertion. That is a review putting an argument, not a trial that separated the ingredients, so hold it loosely. It does support treating the inner work as the point rather than as decoration on a stretch.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The trouble is rarely a stiff body, it is a body stuck in one gear.
When attention has nowhere to settle, give it something. A fixed point on the floor, the breath, the shape your hands are making, or the plain feel of the position you are in.
Take a shape that asks something of you, warrior or mountain, eyes open, the middle of your body switched on. Then, without coming out of it, drop your attention inside and let the pose hold you instead.
What frightens a body is usually not how hard a thing is, it is having no way out. So put movement as an offer. If it feels alright, you might try lifting your arms.
