Lesson 3 of 6 · The sunnah already said this

The verse that gets used as a rebuke

In the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest. It is true, and it gets pointed at people in your position to mean that if you remembered Allah properly this would not be happening to you.

The verse is below in full, because it is worth seeing what it actually does. It describes a state. It does not issue a test. Whether it is also a claim about the course of an anxiety disorder is a scholar's question and not one this course settles, and no counter reading is being offered here.

What can be said is what happens when it is used as a test. That reading turns a promise into an accusation, and it has a specific consequence that shows up in clinics. People stop praying. Not because they stopped believing, but because prayer has become the place where they are told they are failing a test, and it is also the place the thought arrives.

If somebody has said that verse to you in that way, they were reaching for something kind and they handed you something that costs a great deal.

those who have faith and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of God- truly it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace
