Lesson 1 of 6 · The thought that arrives uninvited
The one sentence
A plan that names the moment works better than a general intention. Nothing in this lesson asks you to change what you do about the thought.
The move
Letting it arrive without answering it
3 minutes or less
- When it arrives, do not check whether you still believe. That is the compulsion, not the answer.
- Say once, silently: that arrived, and I am not going to work on it now.
- Carry on with what you were doing with the thought still present.
- It will come again within minutes. Same answer, every time, without impatience.
If it does not work
If you cannot resist checking, do not treat that as proof of anything about you. Shorten the target: hold off for thirty seconds rather than for good, and build from there.
Write the one sentence
A specific plan works better than a good intention. Fill both halves in your own words.
When
I will
Put it in your calendar
