This course explains waswasa and it does not treat it. The treatment with the best evidence, exposure and response prevention, works by staying with the uncertainty without doing the thing that quiets it, and it is worked out step by step with a trained therapist. Nothing here asks you to do that, and you should not build it for yourself from an article. If the doubt is taking hours of your days, lesson six is about finding the right person.

What this course teaches

Treating reassurance as the fuel, on top of the rule the lessons set out

Two things at once. The course starts from the principle of certainty its own lessons teach, that what you last knew for certain still stands. Then it treats the asking, the checking and the repeating as the thing keeping the doubt alive, rather than as a search that will one day succeed.

Why this one

Checking and reassurance seeking are among the best evidenced maintaining factors in this presentation, and the experiments showing that checking degrades your own memory confidence are direct and repeatable. What is claimed here is the mechanism, not a cure.

What this course will not do

Exposure and response prevention, which is the treatment with the evidence for this. It is named, explained and handed to a clinician, because it is a protocol run with supervision and not something to attempt from a page.

Six short lessons on the kind of doubt that will not settle. The wudu you are not sure counted. The intention you said four times. The thought that arrived in prayer and that you could not repeat out loud to anyone. It puts what the tradition has ruled about doubt for a thousand years next to what the research has found about why asking again feeds it, and it keeps both in view at once.

Who this is for

Anyone caught in repeated doubt about purity, intention, prayer or belief, and anyone who loves someone who is. It assumes no clinical background and no training in the sacred sciences.

What this is not

This course does not run exposure work on you, and you should not try to run it on yourself from an article. Structured exposure and response prevention is the treatment with the strongest evidence behind it, and it belongs with a trained therapist who knows your situation. This course also gives no fatwa and no diagnosis, and it replaces neither a scholar nor a clinician. If this is taking hours out of your days, or keeping you from prayer, please read lesson six first.
